W’s Energy Dept. sucked at math

All sorts of information about how the Bush administration mis-managed certain assets and policies have been creeping up since Barack Obama took office. This morning in the NY Times, Matthew L. Wald, covers one of the financial screw-ups of the Energy Department in 2008.

There were plans to fund Futuregen, a company who stood to be the leader in capturing carbon dioxide. The technology could be used to create coal processing plants with zero emissions of gas contributing the most to global warming. Seventy-four percent of funding was to come from federal government while the rest was coming from foreign investments from China and India. However, when the U.S Energy Department analyzed the cost on their end they ended up adding two set of numbers that they shouldn’t have and it severely inflated the expected cost causing the program to be shut down. “The Bush administration said the projected cost had nearly doubled, to $1.8 billion from $950 million; the auditors said it had gone to $1.3 billion, up 39 percent.”

Now after closer detail the Government Accountability department has discover the 1.3 billion number was definitely not correct.

Unfortunately, as a result of the shut down the program and the technology may be pushed back 10 years.

Steven Chu,new energy secretary, has stated he wants to re-examine the program even though, now changes will need to be made.

But, of course, like much of the previous administration’s conduct things aren’t that innocent. “The staff of the House committee found internal communications indicating that the leaders of the Energy Department were looking for reasons to kill the project.”

Global Warming Tracking Satelite causes pollution in Antarctica

Colorado Sate University researchers sent a satellite into orbit in attempts to study global warming effects over the next two years. Unfortunately, the satellite crashed near Antarctica shortly after its launch when its covered failed to remove itself from the satellite and it became to heavy to make it to orbit.

The project cost $280 million and would have spanned 9 years. It is also potentially slowing down the project after it, Glory, “which was designed to gather information about solar radiation and airborne particles reflecting sunlight”.
The National Academy of Sciences has stated that NASA, essentially, needs to pick up the pace on studying global warming instead of focusing on planets we can’t inhabit.

As much of a sci-fi nerd as I am I’m inclined to agree. I’m, all for exploring the universe but we’re not going to make it very far if we’re not here.

Its really difficult not to get cynical about the debate on global warming which despite the trend is still up for argument. On a completely irritated level it seems stupid to me to deny the change happening on the planet but that argument won’t get you very far. So I say even if Global Warming is made up by some gay AIDS infected left-wing anarchist hippies why not invest in efficiency simply for the sake of efficiency. We shouldn’t have to wait two years for the results of some satellite readings to get moving on progress.

Even if we weren’t affecting our environment shouldn’t we be constantly moving forward on making things run better?
